Alvin,
Get the birds going, make sure the sun
Rises out of the sea, keep the tide
Moving, the waves in sets that pause,
Head full of foam, before breaking
On the sand bar, sweep the shadows outside,
Assemble the star fish, sharpen the shells
Of crabs, the teeth of sand sharks, and the fins
Of barracuda, instruct the clouds to be in-
Frequent and thin, the breeze steady and light,
Hold the hours to their schedule, tell
The heat to linger in the pockets of the dunes.
When it falls ask the night what’s up.
